The book that I haven’t started writing yet will be so good that reviewers will claim that it’s the book they’ve been waiting for.
When my publisher reads the book that I haven’t started writing yet, she’ll e-mail me to say, “We’re moving up the pub date” or “We’re moving back the pub date,” whichever one is better.
Even though I haven’t started writing the book that I haven’t started writing yet, I am taking copious notes in preparation. Every single thing I do is research. Binge-watching “The Crown”? Research. Reorganizing my sweater shelf? Research. Spicy-margarita lunch dates? Character who day-drinks with friends and spirals into day drinking alone? Gotta do a deep dive on that. Long hours at a coffee shop that serves filbert-nut milk? Filbert-nut milk is one nut milk too far! That’ll make a funny but insightful pull quote.
