Bloodhound Books on surviving and thriving as an indie publisher

Indie crime fiction house, Bloodhound Books, is killing it right now – and to such a degree that its doors have had to be temporarily shut for submissions.

“Our schedule is full up; we’re set to release seven or eight books a month until June,” says Betsy Reavley, who co-founded the company with her husband, Fred Freeman.

The publishing start-up represents more than 70 authors and already boasts a handful of bestsellers, including The Red Cobra  by Rob Sinclair and 34 Days, a thriller by Anita Waller. An author herself (The Optician’s Wife, Frailty), Reavley was inspired to run her own book business when an indie agreed to launch her first novel, Beneath The Watery Moon.

“I had not really acknowledged that there were independent publishers,” she explains. “As a new writer, you always aim for a Penguin or HarperCollins – and anything below that level isn’t good enough.”
