Miracle Workers or Thieves?

As a professional freelance editor, amateur writer, and brand new member of Freelance.com I am appalled and mystified by some of the projects being advertised on this site.

The first shock to my system was people asking for someone to write a novel for $30.

First of all, a novel is normally between 80,000 and 100,000 words. Anyone who has ever written such a manuscript knows it can take between a couple of months and a year or more to complete. Even if it took only one month, they’re being offered only $1 a day. That won’t even cover the cost of the internet in most areas of the world.

The second huge shock was people actually bidding on these jobs for the price quoted and offering to complete the project in one or two days. Wow these are some miracle workers.

I can only conclude that these people are offering to sell the buyer a plagiarized manuscript. First of all, shame on them for doing so, and secondly shame on any business person for accepting such a thing and planning to make money from it.

Amazon and other sites are now flooded with second rate, unedited books, all in the name of making a quick buck. The public isn’t stupid. They are already buying fewer such books and eventually it will dwindle to nothing.

It would be much smarter to pay a fair price for a quality manuscript and build a name for providing quality content. However, I know there are many out there who simply don’t care and will continue such behavior as long as they can get away with it.
