We’ve all taken a course or two in our life to learn new skills or sharpen old ones. If you haven’t done so yet, I’d highly recommend it. It never hurts to learn something from an experienced person. Learning by trial and error generally ends in less than stellar results and wastes a lot of time and money.
I think writing is very similar to sweeping the floor. Everyone who has ever held a broom in their hands thinks they are more than capable of sweeping a floor without further instruction. However, I’ve learned over the years that not all floors are the same. They can require different tools, different techniques, and even different attitudes. For instance sweeping up four inches of dust in a grain elevator is much different from sweeping up shards of glass in a glass factory or fabric scraps and fibres in a textile mill. You need different types of broom, and different techniques to accomplish any of these.
